On 15th March, 1916, 20th London (Poplar and Stepney Rifles) of 141 Brigade, 47th Division, moved into the front line at Carency, near Souchez just to the north of Arras. They were relieved from these positions on 21st March, 1916. 4 men were killed during this period in the trenches, including Henry Barnard on 20th March. The battalion diary makes no mention of his death but it was likely to have been caused by shell fire, which accounted for 60% of all casualties. |
